Projects
The work at Quinta das Moitas is shaped by the land itself — responding to seasonal conditions, available capacity and what is most needed at any given time.
Some projects are fully operational, others remain in development, and several are planned for the coming years as time, labour and resources allow. All are approached gradually, with an emphasis on long-term care rather than rapid completion.
Current Projects
Market Garden
Status: Operational
An operational organic market garden producing seasonal vegetables for residents, visitors and local exchange. Developed and cared for by Paul, who first arrived as a volunteer in 2021, and has since become a long-term resident deeply engaged in food production and soil regeneration.
Compost & Sanitation Systems
Status: Operational
Sanitation on the farm is managed through dry composting toilet systems designed to safely return nutrients to the soil. Human waste is processed in dual-vault chambers using carbon materials such as sawdust and biochar.
Composting worms and Effective Microorganisms (EM) are used experimentally to support decomposition, while greywater is treated through planted reed-bed systems. All systems have been built gradually and continue to be refined through use, observation and seasonal learning.
Bush Kitchen Café (Outdoor Kitchen)
Status: In Progress
A multi-level outdoor kitchen centred around a wood-fired stone pizza oven, developed gradually using salvaged materials and volunteer effort.
Still under construction, the space is envisioned as a small café-style gathering area and may offer future opportunities for collaboration around food, events and shared use of the land.
Terrace Restoration
Status: In Progress
Much of the land is shaped by historic stone terraces that had fallen into disuse over many decades. Restoration involves clearing overgrowth, stabilising walls where required, and gradually replanting with trees, support species and ground cover.
Work progresses season by season, guided by rainfall, soil response and labour capacity rather than fixed timelines.
Future Projects
Some projects at Quinta das Moitas are already underway, while others are planned for the coming years as time, labour, and resources allow.
These projects represent the next stages of development required to enhance the land’s long-term resilience, improve its ecological function, and strengthen its ability to support the people living and working here.
Water Retention Landscape
Status: Planned
A long-term water-retention strategy designed to slow, spread and store water across the land through earthworks, holding tanks and landscape design. Development will proceed gradually in response to rainfall patterns, land behaviour and available resources.
Maker Space
Status: Planned
Planned restoration of the stone barn into shared workshop spaces for carpentry, metalwork and creative fabrication.
The Maker Space is intended as a communal infrastructure to support residents and collaborators living on the land, providing tools and workspace for skill-sharing, experimentation and small-scale production as capacity allows.
Dovecote Artist Retreat (Pigeon House)
Status: Planned
A historic stone dovecote is planned for gradual restoration into a small, self-contained retreat space.
Once refurbished, the building is intended to provide a quiet space for writers, artists, and digital creatives seeking time for focused work, reflection, or creative production.
Progress on future projects depends on available capacity — including labour, materials and financial resources.
If you feel drawn to support a particular project, whether through funding, skills, materials or collaboration, we welcome a conversation.
Contributions are directed toward practical land stewardship and infrastructure development, and no project is undertaken without the ability to maintain it responsibly over time.
